It might be a barrier in one sense, but the milk mother practice also creates opportunities. Within Sunni Islam - the largest branch of the religion - once a baby reaches adulthood, they are forbidden from marrying the biological relatives of their milk mother. In Islam, a milk mother is generally understood as a woman who has breastfed a baby - that she hasn't given birth to - on at least five occasions before the child turns two.
